How to Improve Your Website’s Internal Links

Internal links are a great way to optimize your content for search engines and keep people browsing your site. However, not all internal links are created equal. There are a few things to keep in mind when adding internal links to your content to ensure they are useful to both your site and your website visitors. Here are a few ways you can maximize the quality of your internal links.

Encourage Engagement

It’s easy to throw in an internal link subtly and randomly, but that’s not always the best choice. Focus on using links that your website visitors are going to click on. Add links that are relevant to the topic being discussed, and encourage your readers to engage with them. This is also a great opportunity to add a call to action. Encourage your audience to visit a product page relevant to the topic, or describe how your business can help them, and then ask them to visit a contact page. Internal links don’t always need to be hidden; there are many ways you can ask your website visitors to engage with them.

Make Every Link Unique and Relevant

Directing each internal link back to the same page does little to help SEO and makes your audience less likely to engage with your content. Make sure each of your links is unique, linking to different pages with different purposes. For example, one link may direct to one of your service pages, while another link is featured at the end of your content to your contact page. It not only helps with SEO, but it also allows visitors to more easily reach each part of your website. Additionally, make sure your internal links are relevant to your content or the specific part of the content they’re featured in. If you are posting content about the details of your lawn mowing service, it doesn’t make sense to add a link to your pool cleaning service page. Links to pages that are all centered around a certain topic are also not as effective. Ensure your internal links are purposeful and well-organized.

Use Proper Anchor Text

Make sure the anchor text terms are straightforward terms and clear indicators of where that link will take the user. Try to include the links as naturally into the content as possible. Also, vary the anchor text between long-tail and shorter keywords.
