Located in Rockingham Country New Hampshire, Derry is the fourth most populous community in New Hampshire. Established in 1719 and incorporated in 1827, Derry was home to many Scottish-Irish families. Derry later became a linen and leather making destination until the textile industry migrated south.
Derry is the birthplace of astronaut Alan Shepard, one of the first men in space. The town was nicknamed “Spacetown” because of this. For a short period Derry was also home to poet, Robert Frost. His farm is now a registered historic landmark. Derry is home to local private school Pinkerton Academy which is one of the top 3 employers in the town and has notable alumni such as the aforementioned Alan Shepard and many notable politicians. Robert Frost was also a lecturer during his time in Derry.
Derry experienced a post-war population boom when populations migrated to suburban areas. The town is now a bustling town with a strong urban center. Derry’s convenient location on Interstate 93 and NH routes 28 and 102 make the town easily accessible.
