Incorporated in 1894, West Palm Beach is the oldest municipality in Southern Florida. What once was the first city in Dade County eventually became part of the newly formed Palm Beach County. The city saw periods of growth. During World War II, Palm Beach Air Force Base was constructed just outside of West Palm Beach bringing a spike in population from military families. Subsequent population booms occurred in the 1950s and the latter half of the 20th of over 100,000 residents. Recent redevelopments have brought much business to the area. Upscale “lifestyle center,” CityPlace, opened in 2000 and brought many shops, restaurants, and entertainment complexes to the area. In 2014, the former Palm Beach Mall wall revamped into open air outlets, Palm Beach Outlets featuring anchor store, Off Saks Fifth Ave.
