Google Search Console, also commonly referred to as GSC, is a free platform designed by Google. It’s a critical tool that helps you monitor, maintain, and hold your presence within search results. This is especially valuable when it comes to your XML sitemap. An XML sitemap is not just a file that lists your website’s pages for search engines like Google to find and add to their database. It’s a crucial element that ensures your content is delivered to users via the search engine results page. To guide you through this important task, the industry experts at Boston Web Marketing have compiled our guide to building and submitting an XML sitemap.
Steps To Creating & Submitting Your XML Sitemap
Create Your Search Console Account
The first step to this process is signing into Google Search Console via your Gmail account. If you don’t have a Gmail account, don’t worry; you will be guided through the simple process of creating one.
Add Your Property & Verify
The next step is to add your property by adding your site’s URL to the intended box on your screen. After adding your URL and confirming, you will need to verify your website. There are many different ways to do so, including verification through your Domain provider, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and HTML tag. You will want to choose the best option for you and what you currently have access to. Once you complete verification, your screen will then state that you have been verified.
Now Submit Your Sitemap
Once you have verification, you can then go to your property. Once you’re there, scroll to the left and click Sitemaps. Once there, type “sitemap.xml” into the empty space after your site’s URL. Once you have it typed and correct, you will then click submit. Once submitted, you will see a green “success.” This means your site was correctly submitted to Google, and your website will begin to be displayed in search results. It is essential to return to this and resubmit your site map by entering “sitemap.xml” whenever you make changes to your site, ensuring Google can read the pages correctly.
