Say Goodbye to Your Competitors with Unique SEO Keywords

In season 10 of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David opens up Latte Larry’s, a new coffee shop (or “spite store”) next to Mocha Joe’s, his rival’s coffee shop. Determined to run Joe out of the strip mall, Larry goes overboard and steals coffee beans from Cabo, installs one-of-a-kind restrooms (including “prayer toilets”), and promotes self-heating coffee cups. By the time the finale rolls around, Latte Larry’s ends up burning down (due to one of the self-heating cups) and the fire spreads to Mocha Joe’s, ending both businesses.

If you’re looking to take down your competition without turning into Larry, consider using a safer option: unique keywords.

What Are Unique Keywords?

According to Moz, keywords are “the words and phrases entered into search engines to discover content.” These keywords can make the difference between showing up on page 1 and page 10. In Larry’s instance, using keywords like “international coffee roastery” (since the beans were from Cabo) or “new coffee shop on Ventura Blvd” would have separated his shop from Mocha Joe’s.

What Are Long-Tailed Keywords?

Unlike unique keywords, long-tailed keywords are extremely specific. Think: “Best coffee shop in Tarzana with organic, sustainable coffee beans” or “coffee shop with self-heating cups in the San Fernando Valley.” With these keywords, you’ll be able to attract niche audiences and rank higher. For inspiration, you can use a long-tail keyword generator to help you come up with some ideas.

How Do I Find Unique Keywords for My Business?

You could perform keyword research on your website to see which keywords direct customers to your business, and which keywords are taking them to your competitors. You could also aim to use more long-tailed keywords that are specific to your location & target audience. See what kinds of words people are using in their reviews of your business, or on social media. (One thing to note here: no need to spam your keywords. Known as “keyword stuffing,” this is a black-hat SEO tactic that violates Google’s spam policy. If Google finds out, the company could ban you from Google search results. Use them sparingly.) If all else fails, you could simply ask your customers how they were able to find you, and go from there.

Just don’t be like Larry.
