Don’t feel like writing your website’s meta descriptions? With Google’s new update, you might not have to — AI will do it for you. In a new LinkedIn post, Brodie Clark, an SEO Consultant, discovered an AI-generated meta description underneath a top-ranking Reddit page. Rather than using text from the webpage to generate a description, “Google’s AI generates the description based on the indexable content found on the page,” Clark wrote. “The description (which included the ‘More >’ link) takes users directly to the thread, which is different to a normal description that only has the title for the snippet as the link.” In addition to updated meta descriptions, Google’s update also features AI Generated Search Snippets, which places AI-Generated “search result summaries” underneath your meta description.

Here’s How Google’s New Update Affects Your Website:

• On the bright side: You may not have to write meta descriptions for all of your webpages (unless you still want to).
• On the downside: As Clark noted, the new AI-generated meta descriptions include a link that takes users directly to your webpage. This could affect your website’s Google Search click-through rates.
• Another downside: Google’s Gemini might write a meta description that doesn’t accurately describe your website. As is the case with many AI-powered platforms, AI can sometimes “hallucinate” and create false information. With AI writing meta descriptions, it could get your website’s information wrong.
• Somewhere in the middle: Maybe Google’s AI-generated meta descriptions will help your website rank better on AI-powered search engines, but what about “traditional” search engines?
• What We Don’t Know Yet: It may be beneficial having manual and AI-generated meta descriptions for your website, especially if one is optimized for SEO, and the other is optimized for GEO.
